The Archers 60th Anniversary (1951-2011)

The Archers  is a long-running British soap-opera broadcast on the BBC’s main spoken-word channel, Radio 4. It was originally billed as ” an everyday story of country folk ” but is now described as ” contemporary drama in a rural setting “. It is set in the fictional village of Ambridge.
With more than 16,000 episodes, it is both the world’s longest running radio soap and the world’s longest running soap opera in any format.
The first episode was broadcast on 1st January 1951 and it has been going strong ever since. It is now a member of the 1951 Club. My thanks to Archers producer Kim Greengrass for agreeing to this.

Update: now over 17,500 episodes broadcast.
