Yuri Gagarin

The world's first man in space

Unless you’ve been on another planet you will probably be aware that today marks the 50th anniversary of manned space-flight.
Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on April 12th 1961.
I was a very impressionable nine-year-old way back then. I was hooked. No more train driver. No more hero of the wild west. I wanted to travel up there among the stars. One interesting thing ( from a 1951 angle) is that Yuri Gagarin whistled a patriotic tune “The Motherland Hears, The Motherland Knows” on his reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. It was written in … 1951.
Personally speaking, I would have whistled the Beatles ‘Help’ … the only problem being that it wasn’t released until 1965!!
