‘George’ (9th May 1951)

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the world’s first  thermonuclear device which was  detonated on the 9th May, 1951 at America’s Pacific Proving Ground. This was one of a series of tests carried out in 1951 as part of Operation Greenhouse.
The device was called ‘George‘ and it had a yield of 225 kilotons. On the left is a picture of George posing for the cameras. Hopefully that’s the last we’ll see of George or any of his friends.
