Greggs … our daily bread in 1951

Greggs is the largest bakery chain in the United Kingdom, with over 1600 outlets. It specialises in savoury products such as pasties, sausage rolls and sandwiches and sweet items including doughnuts and vanilla slices.

It all began in the 1930s when John Robson Gregg started delivering eggs and yeast on his push-bike to local families in Newcastle Upon Tyne. At some time he graduated to a van (or travelling shop) adding bread and confectionary, which he bought from other bakeries, as sidelines and beginning to travel further outside the city in the search for customers. He steadily expanded the business, purchasing additional blue Bedford vans bearing the sign J R Gregg, Baker and Confectioner.

As time went by he became increasingly concerned about the range and quality of products he was able to offer from the other bakeries to sell in his vans. And it was with this in mind, that in 1951, he purchased a property in Gosforth High Street in which to open his first retail outlet and bakery. John Gregg and his wife formed Greggs of Gosforth as a limited company on December 30th, 1951. And the rest, as they say, is … very tasty!
