Double Noir in 1951 …

1951 was a very good year for noir crime thrillers. Two films which illustrate this point admirably are Fingerprints Don’t Lie (1951) and Cause for Alarm (1951). I won’t give away too many plotlines. The pair are available on a double-feature region 1 DVD via Amazon.

Fingerprints Don’t Lie stars Richard Travis, Sheila Ryan and Sid Milton. The killing of Mayor Palmer is being placed on Paul Moody by fingerprint expert Jim Stover as Moody’s prints were found on the murder weapon. When reporter Brad Evans places doubt in Stover’s mind that the fingerprints were Moodys, he decides to investigate further with the help of the mayor’s daughter Carolyn …

Cause for Alarm stars Loretta Young, Barry Sullivan and Bruce Cowling. Mr. Jones is an invalid husband who wrongly thinks his wife and doctor are conspiring to kill him and outlines that suspicion in a letter, which causes a serious concern when he ends up dying anyway …

  2. These really are great films and you’re right, 1951 was a great year in film generally but for noir especially.

  3. Loretta Young and Barry Sullivan – Hollywood royalty!
