There are Elephants in the Room … # 6

Here is some footage of the Bertram Mills Circus Christmas show at London Olympia, filmed by British Pathe in 1951. This circus was disbanded during the early 1960s.

Back in the 1950s it was very common to see performing animals in travelling circuses. Fortunately the practice of using them has now been banned in many countries. Circus life is completely unsuitable for most animals. Regular transport, cramped and bare temporary housing, forced training and performance, loud noises and crowds of people are unavoidable realities for them.

  1. I miss seeing them, but know that the ban is a GOOD thing. I think you can still see elephants at the winter quarters of Barnum and Baily in Florida, where they have a larger home, no transport, smaller crowds.
